Europe targets Chinese e-commerce with new taxes

The European Union is reportedly planning to scrap tax exemptions for small parcels valued under 150 euros ($169.50), a policy change that could affect the roughly 4.6 billion such packages imported in 2023 — over 90% of which came from China via platforms like Amazon, Shein, and Temu. Under the new proposal, parcels shipped directly to EU consumers would face a 2 euros ($2.26) tax, while those sent to local warehouses would be taxed 0.5 euro ($0.57) each. Japan is considering similar measures for goods valued under 10,000 Japanese yen ($70).
