Thailand sees surge in Chinese tourists ahead of CNY

Thailand has been receiving an average of 22,000 to 24,000 Chinese tourists daily in January, with nearly 30,000 arriving on January 28 alone, according to the Tourism Authority of Thailand. Earlier, the Tourism Authority reported that over 10,000 Chinese tourists had canceled their trips to Thailand due to safety concerns, mostly group tours from second-tier cities. However, regular flights continue to operate, and the number of independent travelers remains stable. Thailand is in talks with tour operators to launch more charter flights after the Spring Festival holiday. The Tourism Authority expects that from January 24 to February 2, the number of tourists from mainland China will reach 287,000, generating over 8.8B Thai baht ($260 million) in tourism revenue, up 7% and 9% YoY, respectively.
