Chinese automaker BYD has taken full control of its joint venture with Mercedes-Benz Group, acquiring the remaining 10% of shares in their Denza premium electric vehicle (EV) brand. This move marks the end of a 13-year partnership as foreign automakers reduce exposure to China’s auto market amid rising trade tensions between China and Europe. Established in 2011, Denza initially struggled with sales, prompting Mercedes to reduce its stake in 2021. However, after a strategy shift, Denza has regained success, particularly with its D9 minivan, which became the top-selling luxury people mover in 2023. The company plans to launch its new Z9GT model soon.
