Taiwan fashion pioneer Isabelle Wen dies at 69

Four decades of East-West design Wen formally established her eponymous label in 1989 and became known for ornate embroidery and a signature that fused East Asian artistic traditions with Western fashion concepts. A painting student of master Ou Hao-nien (歐豪年) from age 17, she launched her business from a studio on Taipei’s Dihua Street before branching into interiors and hospitality, including the FiFi restaurant complex on the capital’s Ren’ai Road. The brand operates 17 boutiques and two outlet stores across Taiwan, and the company said operations and sales will continue as normal. “Isabelle created beauty in everything that she touched, life as much as fabric was her canvas. Her attention to detail was impressive … taking the structure of an A-line dress and changing the placement of seams created something almost magical,” Aoife MacCana, who worked in the role of public relations at FiFi from 2001 to 2006, told Jing Daily. “Her collections traveled globally, worn by women from all cultures, never tailored to one specific type of woman.” Stylist Hsieh Li-chun (謝麗君), a longtime friend of the designer, told TVBS that Wen’s niece has returned to Taiwan after studying overseas and is expected to take over the brand.
