Jing Daily continued its Salon Series breakfast events at The Peninsula London on February 2, this time in collaboration with Cart Dept, a media property exploring the intersection of art and car culture. Luxury sector executives attended the exclusive event, where Tanya Rose, founder of Mason Rose, interviewed visionary art collector Larry Warsh on the role of automobiles within cultural branding and the arts. Warsh is the founder and publisher of Jing Daily, the leading authority on luxury and consumer trends, and founder of Cart Department. Over decades, he has shaped conversations between the East and West while building an internationally respected contemporary art collection, working closely with artists such as Marina Abramović, Pharrell Williams, and Damien Hirst on exhibitions, publications, and cross-disciplinary projects. Art cars as cultural IP During the discussion, Warsh explored commissioning artists to transform automobiles into art objects, positioning cars as sculptures rather than vehicles — simultaneously serving as platforms for cultural storytelling. By inviting contemporary artists to reinterpret vehicles through their own visual language, art cars become mobile expressions of creative intellectual property, where branding, authorship, and collaboration intersect, he said. From music video to cultural artefact One of the most striking moments came as Rose quizzed Warsh on owning the Otis Maybach that was destroyed in the iconic Otis music video by Jay-Z and Kanye West. The destroyed vehicle, he noted, now again functions more like a sculptural work than a car, embodying a moment when music, rebellion, and luxury collided. Cars as sculptures, not vehicles Despite not having a driver’s license, Warsh revealed that he owns an extensive car collection. For him, cars have evolved beyond their utilitarian purpose to become art works, and conceptual objects. Divorced from the logic of mobility, they exist instead as static expressions of design, craftsmanship, and cultural meaning — reflecting a shift in how collectors and brands alike are rethinking the role of the automobile within art, luxury brand strategy, and contemporary culture.
