How Asia’s queer love stories are rewriting luxury’s ambassador playbook

Luxury houses are poaching Southeast Asian actors with Boys’ Love (BL) and Girls’ Love (GL) credits, betting on the cultural influence of romance genres centered on same-sex relationships. Bright Vachirawit anchors Burberry. This hiring spree is no coincidence. Fandoms are the new casting directors, shaping which faces gain cultural relevance. The challenge for brands is moving beyond performative campaigns and recognizing that not every ambassador can convert fandom heat into lasting customer loyalty. The opportunity is rooted in Thailand’s outsized role in the BL and GL boom. According to SCB EIC, Thailand produced more than 55% of Asia’s BL series in 2024 and roughly 60% of its GL content, cementing the country as the region’s largest producer of queer-driven storytelling. From Seoul to Southeast Asia: The next wave of luxury influence K-pop idols have long dominated the front rows of fashion week. But Southeast Asian stars are now gaining the spotlight, with their show appearances generating the kind of buzz once reserved for Seoul’s biggest names. Becky Armstrong shows the commercial potential of this strategy. During the Fall/Winter season, #BeckyxTodsFW26 generated 558,892 mentions, while #TodsFW26 reached 745,887, making it the 15th most-used hashtag of the week. Shom Mabaquiao, insights editor at Canvas8, identified three forces behind the BL and GL ambassador trend. First, mainstream audiences increasingly recognize the influence of fandom, often amplified by national pride. Second, fans remain emotionally invested in these stories and actors, extending the fantasy beyond the screen. Third, fashion houses are moving quickly to secure talent before their popularity pushes partnership costs up. “A house like Chanel or Valentino brings that fantasy into reality,” says Mabaquiao, adding that while parasocial relationships have long existed, the digital era has made idols more accessible and fashion campaigns more intimate for fans. “The star may drift further from reach as they rise. Instead, fans watch the prestige unfold, share it across their networks, and feel a sense of ownership. Luxury brands help turn a fandom favorite into a cultural symbol.” That sense of ownership is what makes these communities valuable to luxury brands. J’Nae Phillips, cultural strategist and founder of Fashion Tingz, says luxury brands are chasing cultural communities, not just celebrity status. BL and GL actors command global fandoms that stream content, organize events, and amplify campaigns online. This ecosystem turns visibility into sustained engagement, reflecting how fashion influence now extends beyond Hollywood and K-pop. She does not see K-pop idols losing their grip on fashion houses so much as brands seeking diversification. Engaging with Southeast Asian culture matters because younger consumers are looking for more authentic connections with luxury. Dentsu data reveals that 60% of millennials and Gen Z are no longer satisfied with borrowed external narratives and want luxury that reflects their own cultural context, traditions, and values. “K-pop remains valuable, but the talent pool is overcrowded,” Phillips explains. “BL and GL actors allow brands to reach different fandoms, avoid competing for the same idols, and tell newer stories. Ambassador portfolios, much like runway casting, now embrace varied cultural connections instead of relying on one celebrity type.” Luxury’s move from icons to characters At the same time, GL and BL actors are shifting luxury’s celebrity playbook from aspiration toward connection. According to Phillips, BL and GL ambassadors lean into softer, more narrative-driven styling. Photography favors natural expressions, loose-fitting suits, cozy fabrics, and close-up shots that feel personal, not glossy or stiff. “Unlike K-pop idols in bold fashion-forward looks or Hollywood stars in classic elegance, BL and GL actors appear as approachable characters you could root for, not distant icons,” she says. She observes that luxury fashion is increasingly embracing complex public figures rather than untouchable status icons — a shift that BL and GL stars naturally embody. “Their on-screen characters feel gentle, vulnerable, intimate, and fluid, steering fashion away from rigid gender ideals and polished Hollywood glamour. In modern luxury photography, quiet confidence and emotional storytelling often hit harder than traditional status flexes,” she continues. Taiwan and Thailand lead Asia in LGBTQ+ support, and their fashion scenes reflect this openness by bringing queer stories into the mainstream and normalizing diverse identities. The risk of performative representation However, as BL and GL dramas gain momentum, Mabaquiao warns that the stakes are equally high. Campaigns and ambassador appointments risk appearing as trend-driven moves rather than genuine, sustained commitments to queer visibility. According to Lancaster University research, BL series primarily target straight women, while GL draws a large and dedicated queer female audience. Both genres help normalize queer relationships in mainstream culture and give queer women and non-binary individuals the visibility and validation they have long been denied. These findings point to distinct audience communities that brands should understand rather than reduce to fleeting campaign opportunities. For Mabaquiao, that understanding requires acknowledging the complexities behind queer storytelling and fandom culture. “Everyone gains from queer desire — brands, performers, and fans — while queer people often have the least influence. Thai fandom welcomed Noeul’s [Nuttarat Tangwai] openness about attraction regardless of gender, yet other fan conversations show how much the commercial success of these pairings depends on leaving things unsaid and feeding fantasy,” he says. The gap between fandom and conversion That said, a celebrity ambassador does not guarantee sales. Chanel provides one example. When Jennie Kim wore the Chanel Preppy Coco bag to the Spring-Summer 2026 show in October 2025, the sellout rate rose only from 1% to 2% by December, compared with a 7% sellout rate for yellow Chanel bags during “Blazy mania” in May 2026. While fandoms and parasocial relationships can amplify brand attention, lasting value depends on building deeper connections beyond a single campaign moment. “Fashion houses can capitalize on the buzz around on-screen partnerships through joint campaigns or appearances. These pairings evolve, series end, and fan loyalties shift. The smarter long-term investment is nurturing each actor as an individual luxury name, while using pairing moments only when they fit the broader campaign narrative,” Phillips says. Turning fandom into luxury value Singapore-based cultural strategist Jenn Chew describes the ideal ambassador as a hybrid: someone who can appeal to both high-net-worth individuals and devoted fandom communities. Brands can build this bridge through visual storytelling or by identifying where these audiences already overlap, though neither path is easy as influencer marketing continues to evolve globally. “The fastest way to move products off shelves is to tailor products to what a fandom actually buys,” she explains. “Campaign imagery and front-row seats feed the fantasy, but a limited collection at the right price point triggers emotional buying. An object ‘by the ambassador’ turns devoted fans into free, walking billboards.” She continues, “A capsule collection can attract new customers at luxury prices, provided it is designed with the fandom’s needs and desires in mind. Brands should create personal experiences around it, such as exclusive merch or VVIP meet-and-greets, and treat fans like high-net-worth individuals. This approach is niche and experimental.” However, Chew warns that BL and GL ambassadors face a novelty problem. Only brands with deep marketing budgets and genuine cultural ties to these pairings can sustain the excitement and relevance that make these partnerships valuable. “BL and GL campaigns should focus on storytelling and building a world for fans, not the usual red-carpet-and-merch playbook. Fans want a story, so give them one that weaves in the brand. The Japanese yaoi (BL) and yuri (GL) fandom economy offers a proven example, with decades of data on how emotional investment drives commercial value,” she concludes.
