Wanchai Monocle Shop Follows Locations In Los Angeles, London, Tokyo Reflecting Hong Kong's status as one of the world's top economic and cultural centers, this week Monocle -- the magazine and website founded by Tyler Brûlé -- will open its fourth Monocle Shop in the Star Street area of Wanchai. This location follows others in Los Angeles, London and Tokyo. Hypebeast reports today that the store, which will officially open on July 21, will sell a meticulously curated range of products from the likes of Porter, Comme des Garcon, Gitman, Hackett and Orlebar Brown, along with copies of the magazine. In addition to its new store, Monocle is also opening a new Hong Kong bureau -- its fourth, after New York, Zurich and Tokyo -- which will be funded by the storefront and will focus on the greater Asia-Pacific region in general with a particular eye on China. As Brûlé recently told the Wall Street Journal, though he toyed with the idea of opening Monocle's second Asian bureau in Singapore or Shanghai, the easy international access and freedom of speech afforded by Hong Kong were unparalleled. So does Brûlé's new interest in China mean Hong Kong is well on its way to being as hip as Tokyo or as culturally significant as London? Or is this just another case of bandwagon-jumping? Does Brûlé still look upon the Chinese luxury industry and, by extension, Chinese luxury consumers, with disdain, or has he had a change of heart?
