China today added PVH Group, the American company that owns Calvin Klein and Tommy Hilfiger, to its “unreliable entity list,” a national security blacklist that typically restricts companies’ ability to trade and invest in China, import or export goods, and obtain new business licenses. The action comes as part of China’s broader retaliation against new US tariffs. The Chinese Commerce Ministry had previously investigated PVH for alleged discrimination against cotton from Xinjiang. Chinese authorities have been accused of human rights abuses including forced labor in the region, but deny any wrongdoing. Inclusion on the list could significantly impact PVH’s operations in China, affecting both its manufacturing partnerships and retail presence in one of luxury’s key markets. This development is part of China’s response to US President Donald Trump’s imposition of an additional 10% tariff on Chinese exports, which would take effect on February 10, 2025. The measures against PVH coincide with China announcing new tariffs on US imports and launching an antitrust probe into Google.
