South Korea department store sales jump 21.7% in April on luxury, fashion

South Korea’s department stores posted a 21.7% YoY sales surge in April, driven by demand for foreign luxury brands and fashion, per the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy. The figure — effectively the year’s highest, as February’s 25.6% reflected Lunar New Year timing effects — marks the 10th consecutive month of growth for both department stores and convenience stores. Total major retailer sales rose 7.2% YoY; online accounted for 60.3% of total sales, extending above 60% for a second consecutive month.
