Estée Lauder sues Jo Malone, Zara UK for breach of contract

Estée Lauder has filed a lawsuit against British entrepreneur Jo Malone, her fragrance brand Jo Loves, and Zara’s U.K. business, alleging breach of contract, trademark infringement, and “passing off.” The suit, filed Wednesday and reported by the Financial Times, centers on the use of “Jo Malone” on Jo Loves fragrance packaging sold through Zara. Estée Lauder acquired the Jo Malone brand — and the rights to use her name — in 1999; Malone left the company in 2006 and launched Jo Loves in 2011.
