Hong Kong Airport explores air services agreement with Portugal

The Portuguese Consul-General in Macau, Alexandre Leitão, has met with Hong Kong Airport Authority CEO Vivian Cheung and route development officials to discuss strengthening aviation cooperation. Hong Kong International Airport confirmed it is working with the Hong Kong SAR government to establish or expand air services agreements, as no such agreement currently exists between Hong Kong and Portugal — unlike Spain, which reached one in 2018.

Hong Kong Airport, which added 30 new destinations in 2025, expressed commitment to connecting with global airlines and partners to expand its network. While specific discussions on a potential Hong Kong-Portugal direct passenger route remain undisclosed, interest from industry and the Portuguese community continues to grow. Over 2,200 Portugal-born individuals reside in Macau, with approximately 155,000 Portuguese passport holders living across Macau and Hong Kong. Macau’s tourism authorities and local legislators have repeatedly called for restoring direct flights between Portugal and the region.
