Alibaba enters South Korea market via Shinsegae JV
South Korea’s Shinsegae Group and China’s Alibaba have launched Grand Opus Holdings, a joint venture. Chaired by Shinsegae’s Chung Yong-jin, the board includes three directors from Alibaba-affiliated entities. AliExpress and Temu now rank second and third in South Korea by monthly active users, trailing domestic leader Coupang. In response, Coupang pledged a 3 trillion won ($2 billion) investment to expand infrastructure, while Naver shifted to an e-commerce-first strategy. However, a Seoul survey ranked AliExpress last in consumer trust, sparking concerns over data security and product quality among South Korean consumers.
