Taiwan detects banned dyes in cosmetics
Taiwan detected banned Sudan Red dyes in cosmetics for the first time, prompting 14 companies to recall products and suspend sales. The Taiwan Food and Drug Administration learned in late October that some Chinese-made cosmetics contained Sudan dyes, traced to raw materials from Singapore-based Campo Research. Dermatologists warned Sudan dyes are potentially carcinogenic. Contamination was confirmed in products by Chinese company Kimtrue and Taiwanese company Greenvines. Under Taiwan’s Cosmetic Hygiene and Safety Act, fines range from 20,000 New Taiwanese dollars ($638) to 5 million New Taiwan dollars ($159,500).
