The Metropolitan Museum of Art revealed its 2026 Costume Institute exhibition will be titled “Costume Art,” focusing on clothing representation in Western art from prehistoric times to present. The exhibition will feature historical garments displayed alongside paintings, sculptures, and artworks to examine how dress has been recorded and reimagined throughout art history. The Met Gala will launch the exhibition on May 4, 2026, following the “Costume Art” theme. This will be the first Met Gala since Anna Wintour’s departure as Vogue U.S. editor-in-chief, though she will continue overseeing the event as Vogue’s global editorial director and Condé Nast’s chief content officer.
