Italy plans levy on Chinese fashion imports

Italy is planning an additional levy on certain imported Chinese goods to safeguard its domestic fashion industry, government sources revealed Wednesday. Industry Minister Adolfo Urso announced the policy following a meeting with fashion representatives in Rome, stating it would address the “invasion of ultra fast fashion” products. The levy will operate under the EU’s Extended Producer Responsibility framework, requiring manufacturers to cover waste management costs. The announcement comes as Italy’s luxury sector faces increased supply chain scrutiny. Prosecutors have alleged that Tod’s failed to adequately monitor suppliers, while five other luxury brands have been placed under judicial administration since last year for similar compliance issues.
