UK emerges as BYD’s biggest non-China market
BYD has announced the U.K. as its largest market outside China following an 880% YoY sales surge in September. The automaker sold 11,271 cars in the UK last month, with its Seal U plug-in hybrid SUV driving most sales. This boosted its U.K. market share to 3.6%. The U.K.’s attractiveness stems from its lack of tariffs on Chinese EVs, unlike the EU (levies up to 45%) and U.S. BYD’s UK manager Bono Ge called the brand’s British future “hugely exciting,” noting 100 retail outlets now open. However, the U.K. government’s 650 million British pounds ($875 million) EV scheme excludes Chinese-made vehicles due to manufacturing emissions.
