Mexico will raise tariffs on automobiles from China and other Asian countries to 50% in a broad import levy overhaul announced Wednesday. The Economy Ministry said measures will impact $52 billion of imports from countries without trade deals, including China, South Korea, India, Indonesia, Russia, Thailand and Turkey. Current Chinese car tariffs of 20% will increase to maximum WTO-allowed levels. Economy Minister Marcelo Ebrard said the protection is needed as Chinese cars enter below reference prices. The plan requires Congressional approval and aims to protect 325,000 industrial jobs. Analysts view the move as responding to US pressure to limit China ties.
