Shiseido fined for customs violations in China

Shanghai Wusong Customs fined Shiseido Cosmetics Manufacturing 85,000 RMB ($11,700) for misreporting import declarations, leading to underpaid taxes totaling 187,000 RMB ($25,700). Between September 2022 and April 2024, the company made 12 import declarations covering 9,500 kilograms of vitamin C glucoside. Goods were reported under tariff code 2936270090, taxed at 4%, but authorities determined the correct code was 2940009090, carrying 6% tariff and requiring pharmaceutical clearance. The misclassification resulted in 165,500 RMB ($22,700) in unpaid customs duties and 21,500 RMB ($2,950) in unpaid VAT. Industry experts noted the case underscores compliance risks.
