China's retail sales reached 28.42 trillion RMB ($3.96 trillion) in January-July 2025, up 4.8% YoY, according to the National Bureau of Statistics. July sales totaled 3.88 trillion RMB ($540 billion), rising 3.7%. Cosmetics sales reached 256.3 billion RMB ($35.7 billion) in the seven-month period, up 3.1%. July cosmetics sales rose 4.5% YoY to 26.5 billion RMB ($3.7 billion), rebounding from June’s decline but marking the year’s lowest monthly figure. Online retail climbed 9.2% to 8.68 trillion RMB ($1.21 trillion). On Douyin, beauty GMV reached 15 billion-20 billion RMB ($2.1 billion-2.8 billion), up 31.7% YoY. Chinese beauty brands dominated the platform, with Dirovo, eLL, Pramy, and Mao Geping leading makeup sales.
