French Senate approves fast fashion crackdown

The French Senate this week overwhelmingly approved a new bill to regulate the fast fashion industry, with 337 votes in favor and just one against. Key measures include an eco-penalty tax on polluting companies, a ban on advertising “ultra-fast fashion,” and penalties for social media influencers who promote such products. It also introduces a “cross-border small parcel tax” of 2 euros to 4 euros ($2.15 to $4.30) on low-value packages shipped from outside the EU — widely seen as targeting Chinese e-commerce platforms like Shein and Temu. The bill must pass joint committee review in September and undergo EU Commission scrutiny before becoming law.
