Japan nears 40M tourists despite hotel price surge

Japan is on track to welcome over 40 million tourists in 2025, buoyed by cultural appeal, relaxed visa rules, and the Osaka Expo, despite growing traveler dissatisfaction over soaring hotel prices and declining service quality. From January to April, the country recorded 14.45 million arrivals. However, hotel supply remains strained, and inflation has further driven up costs. During Golden Week, average room rates in Osaka and Kyoto surged by 40% and 20%, respectively. Nationwide, major hotel prices now average 812 RMB ($113) per night, up 40% from 2019.
