Chinese tourists tone down retail spending in Osaka
International tourism to Osaka is rebounding strongly, with Chinese visitors driving growth. Kansai Airport has increased flight capacity by 30% since March. Mainland Chinese arrivals in H1 2025 are projected to exceed 2019’s level of 2.58 million, potentially breaking the record of 5.64 million. From January to March, Osaka welcomed 4.17 million international tourists, up 35% YoY, with Chinese visitors accounting for 30% (1.275 million). However, spending patterns have shifted: accommodation spending per Chinese traveler in 2024 was 16% lower than in 2019, and shopping now accounts for 40% of spending, down from over 50%.
