Chinese visitors to Japan surge 80% as tourism breaks records
Japan recorded over 10 million foreign tourist arrivals in the first quarter of 2025 — the fastest pace in its history — driven by a weak yen and growing global travel demand. According to the Japan National Tourism Organization, 3.5 million international travelers visited in March alone, bringing the Q1 total to 10.54 million, surpassing the previous record of 9.99 million in Q4 2024. South Korea was the top source of visitors from January to March, contributing 2.51 million arrivals, followed by mainland China with 2.36 million — an 80% YoY increase. Preliminary data shows foreign tourists spent 2.27 trillion yen ($14.7 billion) in Q1 2025, up 28.4% YoY.
