US tariff plans threaten Vietnam’s $44B textile exports

The U.S. is set to impose reciprocal tariffs of over 30% on imports from countries including Cambodia, Vietnam, and Thailand, according to a list released by former President Donald Trump last week. As key players in the global supply chain, these countries are facing significant disruption. Vietnam, in particular, stands to be heavily impacted. According to the Vietnam Textile and Apparel Association, the country exported $44 billion worth of textiles and garments in 2024, with the U.S. as its largest market. The Wall Street Journal reports that 50% of Nike’s footwear and 90% of On Running’s shoes are manufactured in Vietnam. The new tariffs may force these brands to raise prices.
