Shanghai exhibition honors Gucci’s iconic bamboo craftsmanship

Gucci will host the Bamboo: Decoding an Icon exhibition at the historic Sunke Villa in Shanghai, showcasing the history and craftsmanship behind the brand’s Bamboo bag. The Bamboo bag was first introduced in 1947 when post-war material shortages in Italy led founder Guccio Gucci to use bamboo as a durable alternative to traditional handles. The exhibition, curated by Milan-based studio 2050+, will feature installations and artworks exploring bamboo’s cultural significance and material qualities. In Chinese culture, bamboo symbolizes humility, nobility, and resilience. The exhibition will be open to the public free of charge from April 1 to April 6.
