China files WTO complaint over new US tariffs
China has filed a complaint with the WTO against U.S. President Donald Trump’s 10% tariffs on Chinese goods, which took effect earlier this week, escalating the trade war between the two nations. Beijing criticized the tariffs as a “serious violation” of international trade rules and retaliated with tariffs on U.S. coal, liquefied natural gas, oil, and agricultural products. In its complaint, China accused the U.S. of making “unfounded” claims about Beijing’s involvement in the fentanyl opioid trade to justify the tariffs, calling the measures discriminatory and protectionist. The WTO confirmed China’s request for consultations, marking the beginning of a dispute process that could lead to a ruling similar to the 2020 WTO decision, which found previous U.S. tariffs on China violated trade regulations.
