‘Ne Zha 2’ leads record-breaking CNY box office surge
China’s film market set a new record during the 2025 Chinese New Year, earning 9.51 billion RMB ($1.31 billion) in box office revenue, surpassing the previous record of $1.09 billion. With 187 million tickets sold, the period saw its highest-ever box office performance. Imax also had its best Chinese New Year yet, generating $53 million, a 57% increase from 2023, with 5.5 million attendees. The top performer was Ne Zha 2, grossing $665.7 million, breaking records, including the highest-ever opening weekend for an animated film in Imax with $22 million. Other top films included Detective Chinatown 1900 ($313.2 million) and Creation of the Gods II: Demon Force ($137.2 million).
