China targets Apple amid US trade tensions, WeChat dispute

China’s market regulator is considering an antitrust investigation into Apple's App Store policies and fees, Bloomberg News reports. The State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR) has reportedly met with Apple executives and app developers to discuss the company's 30% commission on in-app purchases and its restrictions on third-party payment options. The potential probe comes amid broader Chinese regulatory actions against U.S. companies, following new U.S. tariffs implemented on February 4. The development follows failed negotiations between Apple and Tencent over WeChat’s payment systems, where Apple’s demand to restrict developers from bypassing App Store fees was rejected. The move parallels SAMR’s recent probe into Google and comes as Apple faces similar antitrust scrutiny in the U.S., where the Department of Justice filed a lawsuit in March 2024.
