EU imposes 45% tariffs on Chinese EVs, sparks debate

On October 4, the European Union approved tariffs of up to 45% on imported Chinese electric vehicles (EVs) to counter Beijing’s subsidies, sparking strong reactions from political and industrial figures. While European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen emphasized the importance of protecting the competitiveness of Europe’s EV sector, German officials and automakers, including BMW and Volkswagen, warned against a potential trade conflict, advocating for a negotiated solution. Several countries like Italy and Spain also urged caution, while others, like France, supported the decision. Chinese automakers and trade associations expressed disappointment, and experts predicted potential retaliation from China and a possible shift in Chinese manufacturing to the EU to avoid further tariffs.
