China’s Golden Week travel boom: Flights up, prices down
This year’s Mid-Autumn Festival coincided with the first day of ticket sales for the National Day holiday, and reports indicate booming travel demand. Many train tickets sold out within an hour of being released, particularly for routes departing from major cities like Beijing, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, and Shanghai. Based on past trends, the opening of train tickets typically signals the start of domestic flight bookings, with the forecast for the 2024 National Day period projecting 115,000 flights, a 6.2% YoY increase. Notably, average domestic economy ticket prices have dropped by 21% compared to last year, reflecting a shift in airlines’ pricing strategies towards more flexible and cautious approaches. While demand for travel remains high, with international flight bookings doubling from last year, average prices for outbound flights and accommodations have decreased by 15% and 9%, respectively. The increase in international flights, particularly to Southeast Asia and East Asia, is expected to recover to 85.5% of 2019 levels, though US flights remain below 30%.
