China leads global EV sales with 1 million units sold in August
China continues to lead in EV adoption, selling over one million EVs in August alone, according to London-based research house Rho Motion. Globally, EV sales have risen by 20% year-to-date, totaling 9.8 million, with China accounting for six million of those sales, a 33% increase from 2023. In contrast, the US and Canada saw 9% growth, while Europe and the UK experienced a 4% decline, marking the first time the region has recorded negative sales. Germany's 23% drop in EV sales significantly impacted the overall European market. Despite challenges, Chinese automakers like BYD and Hongqi remain ambitious about expanding into Europe, while Volvo plans to prioritize hybrids over fully electric cars in the region.
