Macau hotels bounce back with $1B profit in 2023

According to the latest hotel industry survey by the Statistics and Census Service of Macau, the Macau hotel sector turned from a loss to a profit in 2023, recording a profit of 8.179 billion MOP ($1.017 billion), compared to a loss of 5.098 billion MOP ($635 million) in 2022. This reflects a threefold increase in the hotels’ contribution to Macau’s economy, reaching a total added value of 20.35 billion MOP ($2.53 billion). The survey shows that in 2023, there were 145 operational hotels in Macau, an increase of 12 from the previous year. The number of employees reached 45,700, up 27.8% YoY. The industry offered 46,600 guest rooms, a 23.8% increase, with an average occupancy rate of 81.5%, up by 43.1 percentage points YoY. The Statistics and Census Service noted that with a significant rise in hotel guests and a rebound in room occupancy rates, industry revenue increased 1.4 times to 37.93 billion MOP ($4.71 billion), while expenditure also rose by 41.1% to 29.84 billion MOP ($3.72 billion).
