Tesla gears up for Model Y refresh to counter Chinese rivals

Tesla plans to expand its Model Y production in China by introducing a six-seat variant in late 2025, aiming to rejuvenate its best-selling model amid rising competition. The company has instructed suppliers to prepare for significant output growth at its Shanghai factory, targeting double-digit production increases. Tesla’s expansion efforts include seeking approval to extend the factory and launching a revamped Model Y under the codename “Juniper,” with a five-seat version arriving in early 2025. Despite aggressive competition from local EV makers like Nio and Zeekr, the Model Y remains China’s top-selling car, though BYD’s Seagull sedan is gaining momentum. Tesla is optimistic about continued sales growth, especially with the upcoming introduction of its Full Self-Driving feature in China.
