Carven scales back China presence amid repositioning

Carven, the French fashion brand, has recently closed several stores across China, including locations in Beijing, Chengdu, and Suzhou. In Beijing, only the Wangfujing store remains, with others like those in Sanlitun Taikoo Li and SKP shutting down. The Chengdu SKP store has also closed, and its store in Kehua Wangfujing has been transferred to another ICCF Group brand. Carven currently operates nine stores in mainland China, with four in Shanghai. The brand also has two stores in Paris. This move comes shortly after the appointment of Louise Trotter as creative director in February 2023. Trotter’s designs have elicited mixed reactions, with criticism for the brand’s shift toward younger consumers and rising prices. ICCF Group, a Franco-Chinese fashion group which acquired Carven in 2018, aims to elevate the brand’s positioning, but Carven has struggled to adapt to market changes and missed opportunities for growth during the pandemic.
