EU considers backdating tariffs on Chinese EVs

Chinese EV makers rushed to ship vehicles to the EU before new tariffs took effect on July 5, hoping to avoid retroactive duties. However, the European Commission is considering applying these duties retroactively from March as part of its investigation into potential subsidies. Despite warnings, Chinese automakers increased shipments significantly, with June seeing over 202,000 new EV registrations and Chinese brands capturing 12.4% of the market. The new tariffs could reach up to 48% for some Chinese EVs, but low production costs might still make them profitable in Europe. The Commission will decide on the retroactivity of these tariffs in October and is also set to vote on extending them for five years.
