Unrest in Bangladesh threatens global fashion supply chain

The current political turmoil in Bangladesh is expected to disrupt its garment industry, affecting global apparel retailers such as H&M and Zara. The violence that began in July led to former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s resignation and departure from the country, causing garment factories to close indefinitely. According to the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association, the apparel industry accounts for 83% of the country’s total export revenue. Bangladesh is known as one of the world’s leading garment exporters, with exports totaling $38.4 billion last year. Major brands like H&M, Zara, Uniqlo, VF Corporation, and Levi Strauss have production facilities in Bangladesh, and the unrest could impact these brands’ upcoming holiday sales season.
