Gambling hub Macau eyes Las Vegas-style diversification

Macau’s casino operators are nearing the completion of their current concession licenses, the first time since 2005 when the city’s gross gaming revenue (GGR) was $6 billion, about half of Nevada’s. Over the years, Macau has outpaced Nevada, reaching $37 billion in 2019. Now, as they approach a similar milestone, Macau’s operators are aiming to diversify like Las Vegas, focusing on tourism and leisure. The first quarter of 2024 saw almost nine million tourists, a 79% increase from the previous year, with officials targeting 33 million visitors for the year, close to Hong Kong’s 2023 numbers.
