Nike China faces backlash over ‘disturbing’ table tennis video

The promotional video “Not Everyone Can Be a Winner” released on Nike China’s website on July 19 has sparked controversy among netizens. A scene in the video showing an athlete licking a table tennis paddle has been criticized by some viewers as disturbing and potentially harmful to the brand’s image. According to Citigroup analyst Paul Lejuez, despite Nike’s continued leadership in the sports equipment sector in North America and Europe, the brand’s appeal in the Chinese market has lagged Adidas, causing concern among top executives. The survey indicates that Chinese consumers view Adidas as the most innovative brand and the one they are most likely to purchase from. As of now, Nike has not commented on this matter.
