Chinese beauty guru returns after scandal

Luo Wangyu, a top beauty influencer in China who has over 20 million followers on Douyin, has released a new update after a five-month hiatus prompted by a consumer backlash about the level of active ingredients in the products he was promoting. In this apology video, he has pledged to refund 150 million RMB ($21 million) to customers who purchased the CSS brand olive essence from his online shop or livestreaming sessions after concerns were raised about the product’s authenticity. The CSS olive essence was claimed to contain a high proportion of olive leaf extract, but investigations revealed it lacked key components like oleuropein and hydroxytyrosol. Luo has been criticized for delays in the refund process due to CSS’ refusal to reimburse customers.
