Spanish airports target Chinese luxury shoppers

El País reported on January 7 that Spain’s AENA, a state-owned company that manages airports and heliports, is aiming to attract high-spending Chinese tourists at airports like Barajas and El Prat. The plan, building on a 2022 contract, promotes airport services and experiences to the Chinese market. AENA offers payment options like WeChat Pay, Alipay, and UnionPay, and launched the “Hi China!” app for services at the airports and surrounding cities. In 2023, 382,000 Chinese tourists visited Spain, spending 1.13 billion euros ($1.21 billion), with shopping and leisure as their primary activities.
