Questions arise over Loro Piana’s Peruvian labor practices

Loro Piana, the luxury brand known for its $9,000 vicuña wool sweaters, has come under scrutiny after it was revealed that some indigenous Peruvians supplying the company with vicuña fiber may not be compensated for their work. The company acknowledged this potential issue during an April roundtable discussion with government officials, where Eliphas Coeli, Loro Piana’s general manager in Peru, admitted that while the company deposits payments for the fiber into a bank account, it does not control how those payments are distributed to the local communities. Critics have called this exploitation, while Loro Piana maintains that it works with local communities and NGOs to support infrastructure, healthcare, and education. The company has also increased audits to ensure compliance with ethical standards, although its practices remain under scrutiny, especially regarding the fair distribution of payments to indigenous workers.
