China set to overtake US as South Korea’s 2nd-largest auto source

South Korea’s imports of automobiles from China totaled $1.727 billion from January to October this year, a YoY increase of approximately 64%, already surpassing the full-year figure of $1.249 billion in 2023. The market share of Chinese automobiles in South Korea’s import market has grown from less than 2% in 2019 to around 15% today. If this trend continues, China is poised to surpass the US for the first time to become South Korea’s second-largest source of automobile imports, trailing only Germany ($4.8 billion). Currently, South Korea’s automobile imports from the US stand at $1.788 billion, closely matching the figure for imports from China.
