Chinese tourists drive surge in North Asia tourism in 2024
In 2024, Chinese tourists played a significant role in the inbound and outbound tourism trends across Northeast Asia. In Japan, the number of Chinese visitors surged by 188% compared to 2023, with China becoming the second-largest source of inbound tourists after South Korea, which saw a strong rebound. Similarly, Chinese tourists contributed heavily to South Korea’s inbound tourism, rising by 109% YoY. The top outbound destinations for Japan in 2024 included South Korea and the U.S., while South Korea’s outbound tourism saw rapid growth, particularly to Japan, Vietnam, and China. Overall, tourism exchanges between China and its neighbors are accelerating, reshaping the region’s tourism dynamics.
