Lotus wins trademark battle, rebrands with Chinese name
Lotus Technology, the luxury EV company majority-owned by Geely Holding, has changed its Chinese name from “路特斯” (pronounced lutesi) to “莲花跑车” as part of its brand revival strategy. The new name, which literally means “Lotus sports car” in Chinese, replaces the previous phonetic translation used for five years. The change came after Lotus secured a Chinese trademark for the name. CEO Feng Qingfeng called securing the trademark a “historic legal victory,” marking a milestone in the company’s Vision80 strategy to become a global all-electric luxury brand by 2028. The trademark acquisition follows 20 years of litigation. Geely acquired 51% of Lotus in 2017. The company went public on Nasdaq as “LOT” in February last year and reported over 2,000 global sales in December.
