Hong Kong names new culture, transport chiefs

Hong Kong Chief Executive John Lee has announced major cabinet changes, appointing Rosanna Law as the new secretary for culture, sports, and tourism, and Mable Chan as secretary for transport and logistics, replacing Kevin Yeung and Lam Sai-hung, respectively. These changes come as Hong Kong strives to revive its tourism sector, which has struggled with declining retail sales and weak Chinese visitor spending following protests, pandemic-related border closures, and economic challenges. From January to October 2023, Hong Kong welcomed 36.68 million visitors, recovering to about 73% of pre-pandemic levels, with mainland Chinese visitors comprising 77.3% of arrivals. The new appointments aim to energize the city’s tourism and transport sectors.
