KLM cuts Beijing, Shanghai routes amid rising costs

KLM will cut its flights to China by 20% in early 2025, reducing its Beijing route from seven to five flights per week and its Shanghai route from seven to six. This move aligns with similar actions taken by other international carriers, such as Virgin Atlantic, British Airways, and Lufthansa, largely due to rising costs from restricted access to Russian airspace. However, analysts suggest that declining passenger demand, driven by Chinese airlines’ aggressive international expansion and lower ticket prices, is also a key factor.
