Chinese tourists drive record Antarctica visits in 2023-24
Chinese travelers are increasingly interested in polar tourism, with a record 9,384 visiting Antarctica during the 2023-2024 season, according to IAATO data. After resuming operations in China in July 2023, cruise operator Hurtigruten reported strong business performance, with Chinese tourists representing about 20% to 25% of its voyages. Since reopening its Shanghai office, the company has facilitated trips for 563 Chinese tourists to the Arctic Islands and nearly 1,000 to Antarctica, with expectations for over 600 to the Arctic and more than 1,400 to Antarctica in the upcoming 2024-2025 season.
