China is set to launch its first polar expedition cruise line, 66 Degrees Expeditions, through Guangdong Port and Shipping Group and Guangdong Travel Holding Group. The inaugural Arctic cruise is scheduled for May 2025, marking China’s increased presence in polar exploration in line with government goals. The new venture will use the 6,750 gross-ton vessel Poseidon, previously known as Seaventure and Bremen, which will be refitted for its new role. The ship, with an ice classification of “1A Super,” will accommodate 130 passengers and feature a bilingual crew. This move reflects the growing interest in high-end polar tourism and China’s ambition to enhance its role in global cruise tourism, following a significant rise in polar travel demand and luxury cruise market growth.
