Shanghai targets 20,000 foreign tourists with cultural festival

Shanghai has targeted attracting an additional 20,000 foreign tourists in one month by hosting highbrow arts and cultural events, as part of the local government’s effort to elevate the city’s international profile and spur the local economy. “Some 700 shows to be held during the festival will bring 200,000 visitors,” said Li Ming, president of the China Shanghai International Arts Festival, a unit of the Shanghai Administration of Culture and Tourism, which hosts the festival. And he adds that 10% of those will be from outside the mainland.
