Beijing revises youth unemployment metric, rate rises to 17.1%
According to data from the National Bureau of Statistics, the unemployment rate for urban workers aged 16 to 24, excluding students, was 17.1% in July, up 3.9 percentage points from the previous month. Since December of last year, the National Bureau of Statistics has introduced a new unemployment rate measure excluding students. The previous “urban survey unemployment rate for ages 16-24” was discontinued in August 2023. The official reason for excluding students from the unemployment statistics is to account for their potential temporary departure from the labor market.
